Rhizome Canyon

Brief

This project served as my introduction to Unreal through blueprints. I made a first person game with some puzzle elements.

Carriage

I programmed a carriage which works much like an amusement park ride. The carriage moves on a track, with stops where the carriage breaks down and the player has to solve a puzzle to progress. The carriage follows a spline and stops at set points adjustable in the editor. The canyon itself also follows the same spline, curving with the path the carriage takes.

The carriage is also equipped with a search light, allowing the player limited vision to look around the area and find parts. The search light follows the player camera's look direction smoothly, lighting wherever the player looks. When the player clicks while the search light is shining on a part, the part is teleported into the carriage for the player to pick up.

Puzzles

The player is required to complete simple randomized find and place puzzles to progress. Random pieces of the engine break at each stop and need to be replaced. The player uses the carriage light to find needed pieces, teleports them in, then places the pieces in the engine. The positions of pieces outside the carriage are pre-determined, however the pieces needed to fix the carriage are randomized. In order for the player to be able to interact with the engine parts I created a simple item system allowing the player to click on, hold, and place items.
